I'm so tired that I can't even think of a witty title.
I actually slept for five and a half hours last night. That's the most sleep I've had in one stretch in almost two weeks. Even so, I find myself dead tired this morning as I plop down in my cubicle to begin my day as Random Government IT Cog #754.
I should really go through and comment on some of the news items that have piqued my interest this morning, such as British elections, the first hint of war crimes trials resulting from the ethnic genocide in Sudan, the slow corporate adoption of SP2 for XP and the expiration of the tool that allows corporate licensees to block the download of SP2 via Windows Update, or even the proposed renewal of the Patriot Act.
However, I have no energy for a lengthy discussion on any of those matters. Here's a quick run-down:
- British elections are awesome. I kind of want Blair to win, even though he's Bush's girlfriend.
- The atrocities in the Sudan are inexcusable and are surpassed only by the apathy of the international community towards them. War crimes trials are great, but don't really do any good if the killing continues.
- Service Pack 2 ought to be a priority for any Microsoft customer, corporate or not. However, I can understand why large IT departments would be hesitant to shove SP2 out to their users, particularly if they have an environment with a lot of in-house applications. In addition, the expiration of Microsoft's SP2-blocking tool shouldn't be too large an issue. Any large shop running Windows XP is probably using SUS, ZENworks or some other tool to manage the deployment of Microsoft updates and isn't relying on Windows Update to do the trick.
- The Patriot Act is bad. Self-written warrants, gag orders and the "quick peak" clause are frightening. The DoJ claims they need the powers provided by the Patriot Act to prosecute terrorists. To start with, I don't care what they need if it's unconstitutional. Secondly, they've prosecuted precisely zero terrorists using provisions of the Patriot Act. They've used it to prosecute other kinds of criminals, but not terrorists. Yay, Police State!
Okay, that's it for news this morning. On to more pleasant matters.
The Big Move™ happens this weekend. I'm really looking forward to get into the new place with Jessi. I've never been Mr. Domestic, but the prospect of setting up a home with the woman I love and have every intention of spending the rest of my life with is both appealing and exciting. Hell, I'm even looking forward to buying dishes o_O
We're probably going to go see Sin City on Thursday. It's gotten great reviews and looks to be pretty entertaining and very different. I have never read the comics (I've never been a comic book guy), but I believe Jess has and the fact that she's not horrified by the trailers gives me hope that it won't be a complete butcher job. That and Frank Miller's heavy involvement, of course.
Anyone have a clue how to incorporate an .MST file into a ZEN application object for an .MSI installer? It thwarts me.
