21 January 2005

Every six months or so, I decide that I want to get in on this whole "blogging" thing (because my trend-o-meter tends to run between five and ten years late). For whatever reason, probably my intense laziness, any such attempted weblog falls into disrepair after a few posts and gets all dusty and gross.

So, with the coming of a new year (and spurred on by the fact that a lady I work with who can barely operate the copier now has a blog) I'm going to give this another shot. I'll probably fail again this time, but I'm okay with that. I hope you are too.

There are just a few things that I want to talk about briefly for my first post. I'll do this and then throw up a couple of fluff posts before I start ranting about whatever it is I rant about all the time.

- Work continues to piss me off. In July of 2004 we were told that all IT employees within the Indiana state government would be receiving new job classifications and raises to bring our IT division(s) more in line with the private sector. It is now January of 2005 and every other state agency has received this adjustment but the one I work for (Indiana DWD). I'm now in the unenviable position of holding the same job title as dozens, if not hundreds, of other state employees and making substantially less for the same work. To top it all off, our brand new govenor (Mitch Daniels) has announced his intention to dramatically reduce the cost of government and eliminate unnecessary spending. This means that they're not going to give up that extra salary any sooner than they have too. Gee, it sure would be nice if unions had ever been effective. I guess I'm not so sorry to see Mitch give them the axe afterall. It does bug me that he has the power to do that, though.

- Surprise, my state is still a bastion of backwards, unconstitutional father-knows-best-ism!

- Pending that big fat raise that may never come, it's looking like my next computer might be built around the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe and a Socket 939 Winchester. There isn't anything wrong with my current MSI K8T Neo-FSR and Socket 754 Clawhammer box...but there's also nothing wrong with throwing two 6800GT's in there and making sweet, sweet love to a steaming hunk of technolust. I mean, it would be cool. Or whatever.

- The only thing that makes me happier than checks from the .gov or PCI-E video cards is my girlfriend. It feels weird saying that after years of solitary geekitude, but it's absolutely true. We informally celebrated six months together on Monday and I've never been more content. Life is good.

- Condoleeza Rice sounds like she should be a menu item at Taco Bell. This is not a racist comment, just some juvenile mockery of her ridiculous first name.

- Sweet Jebsu, I actually want a Mac mini.

- The people of the Ukraine rock. That is all.

I guess that's about it for this bit. We'll see if I can't come up with something more substantial to say the next time around. Maybe I'll even make more than one post a month :)
